For testing we have a kit of memory DDR4-3000 HyperX Predator HX430C15PBK4/16. It is supplied in the usual cardboard box. But since we are dealing with a pre-market option, we won’t pay special attention to it. For market release this kit will have a more vivid and informative packaging.

Inside we found two plastic blisters with memory modules, installation instructions, as well as a sticker with the logo «HyperX».

Chip manufacturer is notorious company SK hynix, and chips are as labeled SK hynix H5AN4G8NMFR-TFC. According to the documentation, they are able to operate at a nominal frequency of 2133 MHz with a delay CAS Latency 15 or 16 at a supply voltage of 1.2 V. But we have already encountered these chips in practice, so we can say with confidence that they are able to conquer much greater heights. Chip SPD EEPROM is represented by chip MCP98244 manufactured by Microchip. More detailed information can be obtained using special tools. We refused to use popular programs AIDA64 and CPU-Z, because they interpret the information from the SPD by the old algorithm and not always it is correct. To avoid possible inaccuracies, it was decided to use utility Thaiphoon Burner, designed specifically for the diagnosis of RAM. Please note that there are two XMP-profiles: DDR4-2666 MHz with 14-14-14-36 at 1.5 V and DDR4-3000 15-16-16-39 at 1.5 V. Since all motherboards based on chipset Intel X99 support technology Intel XMP, then one of these profiles should automatically boot without any additional manipulation in the settings BIOS. However, the mode DDR4-3000 MHz may have some nuances. The fact is that when it is activated motherboard automatically increases reference frequency.

In our case it was increased from nominal 100 MHz to 125 MHz, which in principle does not affect the stability of the entire system. However, if you manually have overclocked the processor, thus prohibiting the motherboard to interfere in the process of parameters optimization, the automatic loading of XMP-Profile DDR4-3000 MHz cannot have a success. So do not exclude the possibility that in some cases still have to go into the BIOS menu and pick own settings for correct running of modules DDR4-3000 HyperX Predator HX430C15PBK4/16 at a frequency of 3000 MHz.

But such a situation, at least for now, is common to all sets of memory DDR4, capable of operating at 3000 MHz and above. Apparently, the problem lies at the level of the platform Socket LGA2011-v3. Opponent in the experiment was a kit of memory DDR4-3000 G.Skill Ripjaws 4 F4-3000C15Q-16GRR (4 x 4 GB). Both sets were tested in the following modes:

Before proceeding to the analysis of the results, we recall that in the mode of DDR4-3000 MHz motherboard automatically increased reference frequency to the value of the 125 MHz, and CPU multiplier was reduced to "x28". Thus, at this stage of the experiment 6 core Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition run at a constant speed of 3500 MHz. And after activation of profiles DDR4-2133 MHz and DDR4-2666 MHz its frequency ranged from 3000 to 3500 MHz (technology Intel Turbo Boost). Basically, the difference will be insignificant, but you should take into account such point. 

Now let’s talk about the obtained results. According to testing, the difference between the modes DDR4-2133 MHz, DDR4-2666 MHz and DDR4-3000 MHz is small. It most clearly it can be seen in synthetic benchmarks like AIDA64. Increase of the frequency of 2133 MHz up to 3000 MHz results in a 12% increase in reading speed and 26% growth copying data. And the transfer from 2133 MHz to 3000 MHz doesn’t affect to the speed of information recording.

It is noteworthy that in tests that simulate heavy loads close to reality, the increase the frequency of the modules also consistently led in increased performance of the entire system. Off course the increase of 5% - 8% is not outstanding. But if the performance of any intensive tasks takes a lot of time, a few extra percent of performance certainly will not be superfluous.

Thus, the view that the acceleration of the memory subsystem is a useless thing and can only be of interest to overclockers is wrong. As we can see in everyday life it will useful. Although, of course, not in all situations. For example, the modern game almost did not react to raising the frequency of the modules from 2133 MHz to 3000 MHz. The difference in the results at the level of 1-2% is attributed to the error than to a real increase in performance.

As for the comparison DDR4-3000 HyperX Predator HX430C15PBK4/16 with the opponent, in similar modes of both sets showed similar results.

Overclocking

The factory overclocking of 2133MHz memory chips to the level of 3000 MHz looks pretty good achievement, but we tried to improve it.

These modules were overclocked to 3264 MHz, which corresponds to an increase of 8.8% compared with the nominal frequency. This threshold was submitted at voltage 1.45 V, while in mode DDR4-3000 MHz it equals 1.5 V. However, it was necessary to increase the value of one point CAS Latency (from 15 to 16) and perform the optimization of parameters and the level of the processor.

In particular, the reference frequency was increased (from 100 to 102 MHz) as well as voltage on the system agent (from 0.88 to 1.00 V).
