ASUS GeForce GTX 760 STRIKER PLATINUM review and performance test

ASUS ROG graphics cards always attract users due to high performance, innovation and the highest quality. Not very long ago we introduced you the model ASUS ROG MARS 760 with dual-GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 and excellent performance, but at the same time high cost. In the present review we will talk about the new addition to the family of top gaming graphics cards namely ASUS GeForce GTX 760 STRIKER PLATINUM. In contrast to the previous model this model has only one GPU which makes it moderate for the users.

In this case the manufacturer had focused on the quality of the circuitry and productive cooling system. Theoretically this feature should give the groundwork for high overclocking potential and we'll check it. But let us proceed directly to the product and its specifications.

Since we have a modification of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 we cannot talk about any conformity to reference device. The only thing that can be compared directly is the working frequency. In this case the graphics core can boasts a notable level of factory overclocking up to 1085 MHz (growth 10.7% compared to the recommended 980 MHz) and the technology of NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0 with average value 1150 MHz. Video memory is operated at the recommended effective frequency 6008 MHz.

  • DIGI+ VRM with 8 Phase Super Alloy Power. The product has 8-phase digital power subsystem and effective Super Alloy Power circuitry. It includes Japanese black solid capacitors with 5 time increased life time and improved on 20% endurance at high temperatures, chokes with ferrite core as well as tantalum-polymeric solid POSCAP capacitors with high level of stability and performance even in the mode of extreme overclocking.  As for the everyday usage, the about mentioned advantages allows to increase power efficiency up to 15%, and reduce the noise of force elements up to 30%. Also it became possible to increase the life time of graphics adapter on 2.5 times.

  • DirectCU IIproprietary cooling system that includes three heat pipes. At the same time it directly contacts with graphics core. The structure slows to reduce GPU temperature on 37% and noise level on three times in comparison with reference cooler of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 model.

  • CoolTech Fan Technology. One of two fans in cooler system is made in accordance with hybrid technology. Also it combines internal radial fan and external axial fan (with classical blade design). According to the manufacturer such structure provides multidirectional air flow and promotes rapid heat removal.

  • Ultimate performance. According ASUS data the product provides improved performance (up to 10%) in some popular games. And we are going to check this information.

  • ROG Color-coded Load Indicator. The fans of modding should appreciate ROG logo on the lateral side of the card. It’s equipped with LED lighting changing it color depending on load level: from blue (low level) to yellow (medium level) and red (high level). However during the maximum testing its color was yellow.

  • GPU Tweak и GPU Tweak Streaming. The set of delivery includes proprietary software which can be used not only for work monitoring and graphics card overclocking but also for organization of direct online translation of game process via Internet.

As we can see to produce this product a new unique circuit board was developed. Its dimensions exceed the reference  analogue. But in spite of the unique design the main principles of elements arrangement are the same: video memory chips are united around graphics core; power subsystem elements of GPU are at the right and elements of video memory at the left side.

Power supply of graphics card is performed via enhanced 8-phase scheme (six phases for the GPU and two for memory chips), while the reference  version includes two phases less for graphics core. As we have already mentioned the circuitry corresponds to concept Super Alloy Power. It composes only the highest quality components: black Japanese solid capacitors, ferrite core chokes, and tantalum-polymer solid capacitors POSCAP, that extends the life time of the whole card.

The power core subsystem is based on a digital PWM controller DIGI+VRM ASP1212 of International Rectifier company production which supports active control of eight phases and has a number of security technologies: OVP (over-voltage), UVP (under-voltage), OCP (overload current) and the OTP (of the over-temperature).

In addition to PCI Express 3.0 x16slot power supply of ASUS STRIKER-GTX760-P-4GD5 is provided via two additional connector located on one side of the graphics card. One of them is 6-pin and the second 8-pin. The reference design involves the usage of two 6-pin PCIe connectors.

Around them there are LED load indicators that helps quickly diagnose the possible problems. The connectors are arranged very comfortable (“upside down”) so the connection and disconnection of power cables is convenient.

To realize NVIDIA SLI technology for ASUS STRIKER-GTX760-P-4GD5 two connectors for bridges are used. The reverse side of the circuit board is protected by metallic lattice and has mentioned above tantalum-polymeric solid POSCAP capacitors and half of video memory chips. Also this lattice has not only protective function but also pays the role of low-profile cooler taking part in the process of heat removal.

The base of the product is graphic processor NVIDIA GK104 (Kepler) of GK104-225-A2 modification. It is produced according 28-nm technical process and includes 1152 shader processors (CUDA cores) and 32 rasterization blocks. As we have already mentioned  GPU frequency in nominal mode was increased up to 1085 MHz. Taking into account the support of NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0 the frequency of GPU was 1150MHz.

Graphics card ASUS GeForce GTX 760 STRIKER PLATINUM memory is 4GB. It is collected by 16 SK Hynix chips with capacity 256MB each. The chips have a marking H5GQ2H24AFR-ROC and according to the documentation its nominal effective frequency is 6GHz. Data exchange between memory and graphic processor is carried via 256 bit bus with carrying capacity 192.3 GB/s.

Cooling system

Video accelerator together with proprietary DirectCU II cooling system takes 2 expansion slots and its length is 299mm (according measurements in our test lab).

The cooler consists of a big radiator made of 45 aluminum plates. Also it includes two fans with propeller diameters 95 and 94mm fixed on the case.

To provide the equalized heat distribution the producer had used three copper heat pipes with diameter 8-10-8mm. The scheme of contact with graphics card surface via layer of thermal paste is used. At that the contacts are reliably soldered to the edges of aluminum cooler and copper base.

Fan edges and heat pipes are covered by nickel layer. It is used to decrease the loss of efficiency during operation caused by metal oxidation.

To cool field-effect transistors a low-profile radiator with thermal interface is applied. And memory chips on the front side don’t have any additional cooling.

During automatic speed control of fan rotation in a mode of maximum load the graphic processor was heated up to 68°С. Cooler operation capacity was 46% from its maximal speed. The noise level was low and did not provide discomfort at durable usage.

After forced rotation speed enhancing to maximum level GPU temperature was decreased to 55°C. This noise level can be characterized as above-average, not suitable for durable usage. This mode is required only for manual overclocking and in everyday usage you won’t face with it.

During the absence of load the frequency of GPU and memory is automatically decreased. This allows to reduce energy consumption and heat release. In this mode GPU temperature didn’t exceed 26°C and noise level was very low.  

As a result a proprietary cooling system DirectCU II is a qualitative and strong solution. It coped with NVIDIA GK104 GPU cooling almost without any problems. In everyday usage you won’t fill any discomfort because at automatic fan rotation speed control it is quiet. Also we want to specify that obtained results are one of the best among other tested modifications of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760.
