Graphics cards with basic NVIDIA GK110 take the leading places among the most efficient adapters. At the present time NVIDIA Company has four such models: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN, NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN Black and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti.

This review is devoted to the modification of the most cost-effective card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780) of Palit Company Palit GeForce GTX 780 JetStream. It is distinguished by factory overclocking, unique design, proprietary cooling system and Blue LED backlight. But let’s proceed directly to the product and its specifications.

As we can see the Palit GeForce GTX 780 JetStream differs from the reference version not only by the availability of proprietary cooling system and improves power subsystem but also higher graphics core clock frequency from 863 to 902 MHz (growth 4,5%). Taking into account NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0 technology the average value is 954MHz. At that the video memory operates at recommended effective frequency 6008 MHz.

The box is made of high quality cardboard with carrying handle. As usual for Palit JetStream solutions dark and goldish colors predominate. The key information on the front side includes capacity and type of video memory and NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0, NVIDIA SLI technology support.

  • Outstanding Achievements – thanks to proprietary cooling system and improves circuitry the engineers could reduce temperature of graphics processor and noise level, as well as increase overclocking potential in comparison with reference graphics card.
  • Triple Fan – cooler structure includes three fans of different diameter. This leads to more effective cooling of key elements of video accelerator.
  • TurboFan Blade  - due to the usage of blades of special shapes the fans of cooling system provide more strong air flow.
  •  Optimized Air Flow – the blades of cooling system rotate in different directions that slows to  improve the performance of heat removal.
  • LED Lightning – the fans are quipped by blue LED backlight providing the original design.
  • DrMOS – DrMOS chips are used for memory chains of graphics core and video memory. They have reduced heat release.
  • 8-Phase PWM – power subsystem of graphics core uses reinforced 8-phase scheme. This will improve the stability of graphics card operation during the overclocking.
  • ThunderMaster – the supplied software ThunderMaster allows you not only to check the condition of video accelerator in real time but also overclock it by pressure if required.

Design and circuitry

Palit GeForce GTX 780 JetStream (NE5X780H10FB-1100J)

Unfortunately we could not disassemble the sample for testing because one of the fastening screws was covered by warranty sticker. Due to the design we can conclude that its base is circuit board of reference design but with improves circuitry and reinforced power subsystem.

The power subsystem is performed according to 10-phase scheme (8 phases for GPU and 2 for memory chips). At the same time the reference version includes only eight phases (6+2 scheme). As for the circuitry, the solid capacitors and DrMOS chips are used. This feature will affect on overclocking potential and stability of operation.

The power core subsystem is based on a digital PWM controller NCP4208 of ON Semiconductor company production which supports active control of eight phases. According to the documentation is has short circuit security and characterized by improved performance due to the support of energy savings function (Auto-PSI).

On the surface of circuit board there are especial sockets for voltage measuring on all basic components of graphics card. This measuring can be performed by multimeter.

In addition to PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot power supply of the product is provided via two additional connector located on one side of the graphics card. In accordance with reference design one of them is 6-pin and the second reinforced 8-pin. The cooling system doesn’t prevent the connection/disconnection of power cables.

To realize NVIDIA SLI technology for Palit GeForce GTX 780 JetStream two connectors for bridges are used. They allow to combine from two to four graphics accelerators for the joint calculation of graphic effects. The base of the product is graphics chip NVIDIA GK110 (Kepler). It is produced according 28-nm technical process and includes 12 active SMX- clusters, 2304 shader processors (CUDA cores) and 48 rasterization blocks. As we have already mentioned GPU frequency in nominal mode was increased up from 863 to 902 MHz. Taking into account the support of NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0 the frequency of GPU was 954MHz. Video memory is collected from GDDR5 chips with capacity 3GB and interface width 384bit. Its effective clock frequency is 6008MHz, and carrying capacity is 288,4 GB/s.

Cooling system

In addition to the unique design the cooling system of the product is quite big. Graphics card together with installed cooling system takes 2 expansion slots and its length is 280mm according the information from website of Palit Company (294mm according measurements in our test lab).

Cooling system of Palit GeForce GTX 780 JetStream corresponds to Palit GeForce GTX 780 Ti JetStream. It means it consists of double-section cooler assembled from 54 and 47 aluminum nickel plates, five heat pipes with diameter 6mm each and three fans with blade diameters 76-88-76mm fixed on the plastic enclosure.

Also we would like to specify the performance of cooler where the contact of heat pipes with blades and copper basis is improved due to solder. To cool video memory and DrMOS chips a separate low-profile cooler is used. It is made as support plate responsible for cooling and improves the durability of the entire structure.

During automatic speed control of fan rotation in a mode of maximum load the graphic processor was heated up to 76°С. Cooler operation capacity was 52% from its maximal speed. The noise level was medium and did not provide much discomfort at durable usage.

At the mode of maximum rotation speed the GPU temperature was reduced on 10 degrees. The noise can be characterized as above-average, but at the same time it is quite suitable for durable usage.

During the absence of load the frequency of GPU and memory is automatically decreased. This allows to reduce energy consumption and heat release. In this mode GPU temperature didn’t exceed 28°C and noise level was very low.  

As a result cooling system of Palit GeForce GTX 780 JetStream is a qualitative and strong solution. The only peculiarity is big sizes and you should take into account this fact while purchasing.
