GIGABYTE GA-B85M-D3H motherboard review and testing

In this overview we are going to tell you about reasonable GIGABYTE GA-B85M-D3H motherboard which is made on the basis of Intel B85 Express chipset. First of all it is intended for compact office systems as it has Intel Small Business Advantage support. It is suitable for inexpensive and qualitative basis for your home PC including video card.

Before learning its features we want to specify its price which on average is around $ 75-80. The key advantages are the support of COM, LPT, USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s ports, PCI sockets realization as well as good choice of font interface.

Packaging and content


Packaging of GIGABYTE GA-B85M-D3H is in standard traditions of Taiwan Company which does not save money even for low-price solutions. The box is made of cardboard and has qualitative color printing of dark colors. The front side contains Company name, device type, logo with information about the support of technology Intel Small Business Advantage. Also you will find the logo of Ultra Durable 4 Plus conception that combines the following features:

  • Ultra Cool a new sample of high efficiency cooler is used for cooling.
  • Ultra Performance - circuitry includes high quality components such as solid-state capacitors and Field Effect Transistor with low channel resistance (Low RDS(on)). They have higher level of efficiency, stability and reliability.
  • Ultra Safe - this model is equipped with two chips with BIOS firmware download (main and additional) that will allow you to avoid a visit to the service center in case of main chip damage. Also there is an additional protection of USB and LAN connectors against electrostatic discharge. Each LAN and USB connector is operated with a special protective filter that can withstand severe electrostatic discharge. It protects the system against power instability even during a thunderstorm.


On the reverse side of the box the user can find diagrammatic representation of motherboard, its interface panel configurations, as well as brief technical specification. Several interesting features are specified:

  • circuit board protection against moisture and high temperature;
  • support of HDMI video interface with image resolution 3840 х 2160 pixels (4K Ultra HD);
  • the usage of separate safety device for each USB port on interface panel. In case of damage of one of them will save the operation of another one.

Design and features of this board


The basis of GIGABYTE GA-B85M-D3H motherboard is dark-brown microATX (244х225 mm) textolite. Slots and ports have dark, gray and white colors. This provides some strictness to the product and does not mar its design.

Regarding compositing of on-case elements, first of all you should notice the absence of holes for fastening screws at right side of circuit board, so you should be very careful while SATA and main power socket connection. We would like to pay your attention that two of six SATA ports are placed in parallel with textolite surface. This will not prevent the connection with the most long-length boards. 


As we can see the reverse side has not any visible elements. Here is only a standard LOTES support plate of CPU socket. In addition we want to specify the usage of screws for reliable fastening of cooler elements. The cooler is fixed by plastic spring clips.  


The lower part of textolite has the following ports and sockets: leading-in audio socket in front panel; S/PDIF Out; COM, LPT and TPM ports; CMOS jumper; two leading-in sockets for USB2.0 enable, as well as leading-in socket for front panel. Total number of USB 2.0 ports is eight: four inside and four on interface panel.


Disk subsystem organization is presented by six SATA ports. Two of them (black) support the specification of SATA 3Gb/s, and the other four (white) correspond to the standard SATA 6 Gb/s. The operation of all six interfaces is realized by the chipset.


GIGABYTE GA-B85M-D3H is equipped with four DIMM-slots for installation of standard DDR3 memory modules, which are equipped with latches on both sides. RAM can operate in dual channel mode. For its realization the memory blocks should be installed either in the first and third or second and fourth slots. Modules operating at frequencies up to 1600 MHz in the nominal mode are supported. The maximum capacity can reach 32 GB. This should be enough for almost all tasks.

Also draw your attention to the 19-pin USB 3.0, which is used to activate the two external interfaces USB 3.0. Total number of USB 3.0. ports is four: two internal and two on the interface panel.



Cooling system of the product consists of two aluminum radiators: the first covers the elements of processor power subsystem, while the second is responsible for cooling of the chipset.

In the process of testing the following temperature indices were fixed:

• radiator for chipset cooling - 35,5°C;

• radiator for cooling of processor elements power - 38,6°C;

• Chokes of power system – 49,6°C.

As we can see the cooling system easily copes with its responsibilities and the results can be described as excellent.



Processor power supply is performed via 4-phase scheme for computational cores and additional joints.

Converter is based on a digital PWM controller ISL9582. The circuitry of motherboard was collected using high-quality components in accordance with the original concept of Ultra Durable 4 Plus. It is composed of: solid capacitors and field-effect device with low resistance of open channel (Low RDS (on)). Basic 24-pin and additional 8-pin connectors are use for power feeding. 


To extend motherboard functionality the user has 4 slots:

  1. PCI Express 3.0 x16 (mode х16);
  2. PCI Express 2.0 x1;
  3. PCI Express 2.0 x1;
  4. PCI Express 2.0 x16 (mode х4);

Despite the support of AMD CrossFireX technology, the motherboard is more suitable to build the system with a one video card. The question is that the mode of distribution lines x16 + x4 (in case of two graphics cards) does not allow to realize their potential in full manner.


As Intel B85 Express chipset does not support PCI bus, the functioning of the relevant slot is realized by a usage of PCIE-PCI bridge based on the controller ITE IT8892E.


To provide the peculiarities of integrated graphics core you can use three video outputs: HDMI, D-Sub and DVI-D which is implemented by two chips PTN3360DBS и ASMedia ASM1442.


Opportunities of Multi I/O are based on controller ITE IT8728F, which controls the operation of the system fans, ports COM, LPT and PS/2, as well as provides the monitors.


To support network connections there is gigabit LAN-controller Realtek RTL8111F. Network resource control and traffic priority can be performed by utility of LAN Optimizer.


Sound subsystem is based on HAD codec of 8-channel sound Realtek ALC892 that supports 2/4/5.1/7.1. sound systems.


Interface panel contains the following ports:

  • 1 x HDMI;
  • 1 x D-Sub;
  • 1 x DVI-D;
  • 1 x LAN (RJ45);
  • 2 x USB 3.0;
  • 4 х USB 2.0;
  • 1 х PS/2 (mouse and keyboard);
  • 6 x audioports.

 We  have put the highest mark for this configuration of interface panel due to a set of video outputs (including HDMI with image resolution 3840 х 2160 pixels (4K Ultra HD)), availability of sufficient number of USB port, as well as comfortable connection of multichannel acoustics. Also you can lead COM and LPT ports to back panel using blocks on circuit board.


Four sockets for fan connection are used to organize cooling of GIGABYTE GA-B85M-D3H motherboard. One of them is used for the CPU cooling system, and the other three - to activate the system of fans. All sockets are in accordance with the modern requirements.



GIGABYTE GA-B85M-D3H model is equipped with a modern UEFI insertion based on microcode AMI with an opportunity of changing of graphical interface. Also there is availability to control by a mouse and support of storage device capacity 3 TB. It has two BIOS chips (DualBIOS technology) which will keep system operation in case of the main chip damage.


“MB Intelligent Tweaker” (“M.I.T.”) section combines the settings of BCLK Frequency, CPU, integrated graphics core and RAM.


The multiplier allows to set the memory frequency within 800-1600MHz.
